Longwood Medical Area housing and commute guide
Where healthcare professionals working in Longwood actually live, how they get to the campus, and the practical constraints — parking, call coverage, and transit reliability — that shape the decision.

Why Longwood is its own housing decision
The Longwood Medical and Academic Area holds one of the densest concentrations of hospitals, research institutes, and teaching appointments in the country, inside a few walkable blocks. That density is the whole point of the campus — and it is also why housing here works differently from the rest of Greater Boston.
Parking supply is limited and mostly allocated through the institutions themselves. Most people arrive on foot, by bike, on the Green Line, or via the campus shuttle network. So the useful question is not simply which neighborhood you prefer, but which commute you can rely on at 5:30 in the morning, in February, after a long night.
The campus
Institutions in the Longwood Medical Area
Brigham and Women's Hospital
75 Francis Street and the Shapiro Center anchor the western edge of the campus. Shift changes and call coverage put a premium on short, weather-proof commutes.
Boston Children's Hospital
300 Longwood Avenue. Pediatric call teams often prioritize a predictable door-to-door time over square footage.
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
East and West campuses split along Brookline Avenue, so a short walk or shuttle hop between buildings is part of a normal day.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Jimmy Fund Way and Brookline Avenue. Clinic schedules and research appointments often mean steady daytime hours rather than overnight call.
Joslin Diabetes Center
One Joslin Place, adjacent to BIDMC, with the same walk-and-transit access profile.
Harvard Medical School
The Quad on Longwood Avenue. Faculty with dual Boston and Cambridge appointments weigh access to both sides of the river.
Commute corridors
Three ways people get to Longwood
Choose the corridor first, then the home. Timings below are typical planning estimates, not guarantees — test your own route at your own hours.
Walk and bike corridor
Closest to the campus, with the shortest and most weather-independent commutes. Housing is primarily condominiums, brownstones, and two- and three-family homes.
Brookline — Coolidge Corner, Brookline Village, Longwood
Roughly a 10 to 25 minute walk or a short ride down Longwood or Harvard Avenue. Green Line C and D branches as a backup in bad weather.
The Fenway and Kenmore
A 10 to 15 minute walk. Newer mid-rise condominiums, the highest concentration of elevator buildings near the campus.
Mission Hill
Directly adjacent to Brigham and Harvard Medical School. Dense, urban, and the shortest commute of any option here.
Direct transit corridor
One-seat rides on the Green Line D and E branches, or short bus and shuttle connections. Useful when you want more space without adding a car to the equation.
Newton — Chestnut Hill, Newton Centre, Newton Highlands
Green Line D branch to Longwood station in roughly 20 to 30 minutes. Single-family homes, yards, and a full suburban services base.
South End and Back Bay
Green Line E branch or a cross-town bus. Classic brownstones, dense dining and retail, and quick access to downtown campuses as well.
Jamaica Plain
Orange Line, the 39 bus, and the Emerald Necklace bike route. A common choice for households that want green space and a short commute.
Commuter rail and highway corridor
For households prioritizing space, a driving or rail commute with a final transit or shuttle leg into the campus.
Needham and Wellesley
Route 9 by car, or commuter rail to Ruggles or Back Bay with a short shuttle or Green Line connection into Longwood.
Dedham, Westwood, and Milton
Commuter rail to Ruggles plus a shuttle, or a drive in via the Jamaicaway and Riverway. Test the drive at your actual shift hours.
Belmont, Arlington, and Lexington
Route 2 to Fresh Pond Parkway and the Riverway, or the Red Line from Alewife with a transfer toward Longwood. Belmont also has Fitchburg Line stops. Test the drive at your shift hours.
Winchester
I-93 or Route 2 by car, or the Lowell Line to North Station with an Orange or Green Line connection. Single-family homes on larger lots in exchange for a longer commute.
Cambridge and Somerville
Best suited to households with a second appointment or partner role on the Cambridge side; the cross-river commute adds time in both directions.

Practical realities
What shapes the search here
Call radius before square footage
If your program or department sets an expected arrival window for call coverage, that window — not the listing price — sets the outer boundary of your search. Measure door-to-door at the hours you will actually travel, including overnight and early morning.
Parking is the constraint, not the road
Longwood has one of the tightest parking supplies in the region. Staff garage access is commonly waitlisted, monthly costs are meaningful, and residential permit rules differ street by street in Boston and Brookline. Confirm what your institution offers before you assume a car commute.
Shuttles are part of the network
The MASCO shuttle system connects Longwood to Ruggles, the Fenway, Kenmore, and other Boston campuses. A neighborhood that looks poorly served by the T is sometimes a short shuttle ride away.
Financing built for clinical careers
Physician and healthcare professional loan programs in Massachusetts can reduce or eliminate the down payment and treat deferred student loans differently from conventional underwriting. That materially changes what is reachable in Brookline, Boston, and Newton.
Parking policies, shuttle routes, and garage costs are set by each institution and change over time. Confirm the current details with your employer before making a housing decision around them.
